Declaration of Generative AI in Scientific Writing
To maintain transparency and academic integrity, authors submitting to International Sports Studies must disclose any use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools in the manuscript preparation process at the time of initial submission.
This policy applies only to the use of AI in drafting and refining the written manuscript, and not to its use in data analysis, visualization, or other research-related tasks.
Acceptable Use
Authors may use generative AI or AI-based writing support tools solely for improving readability, grammar, and language clarity. These tools must be used under human supervision, and authors remain fully responsible for verifying the accuracy, coherence, and originality of the final content. AI-generated content should never be accepted uncritically, as these tools may produce errors, misrepresent facts, or introduce unintended bias.
Authorship and Responsibility
AI tools cannot be listed as authors or co-authors. Authorship carries ethical and intellectual responsibilities that can only be assumed by human contributors. The use of AI does not alter the authors’ full accountability for the scientific and ethical integrity of the manuscript.
Required Statement for Submitted Papers
If generative AI or AI-assisted writing tools were used during manuscript preparation, authors must include a declaration in a separate section of the manuscript, to appear in the final published article.
This section should be inserted before the references under the heading "Declaration of Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technologies in the Writing Process.”
Example Statement:
“During the preparation of this manuscript, the author(s) used [insert name of AI tool or service] to assist with [e.g., improving language clarity, grammar, or phrasing]. The author(s) carefully reviewed and revised the output to ensure accuracy and take(s) full responsibility for the content of the final manuscript.”
When No Declaration Is Required
A statement is not required if the manuscript was written solely by the authors or if only basic digital tools (such as spell-checkers or reference managers) were used. International Sports Studies encourages responsible use of emerging technologies while upholding rigorous scholarly standards. Misuse of AI tools that compromises the integrity or originality of the manuscript will be treated as a breach of ethical publishing practices.
